Masopust in Prague (Mardi Gras) 2019

Details: Masopust is the traditional Czech carnival celebration. The word “masopust” comes from the Old Czech and means “meat fast”. People wear masks, dress up in costumes, celebrate the start of spring, fertility and give farewell to winter. Masopust is a moveable feast day and the last chance to feast before Easter Lent, the 40 weekdays and six Sundays preceding Easter.

Žižkov Mardi Gras Celebrations 2019
February 2 to 3, 2019, Jiriho z Podebrad square
Žižkov carnival celebrations include the traditional parade of masks and great programme for both kids and adults. The carnival parade takes place on February 5, 2019. It starts at Jiriho z Podebrad square, continues to Havličkovo square and ends at Viktoria Žižkov football arena. Participants will meet from 16:00 to 17:00 hours. Then a horse carriage, musicians, artists, giant puppets of angels or pigs set off to request a “key” from the Žižkov Townhall. All participants can enjoy traditional specialities and goodies. The entrance is free.

Mardi Gras Celebrations at Ctěnice 2019
March 3, 2019 from 10:00 to 17:00 hours, The City of Prague Museum – The Castle Area Ctěnice. Masopust celebrations at Ctěnice offer a carnival parade, music, cheerful atmosphere as well as traditional doughnuts, hot cider and mead. Kids can enjoy art workshops or and face painting. Entrance to the event is free of charge.

Mardi Gras Celebrations at Little Quarter
March 2, 2019, from 13:00 to 16:00 hours, the parade will reach Kampa around 16:00 hours. The entrance is free.

Mardi Gras Celebrations at Letna 2019
March 22, 2019, 1 p.m. -5 p.m., National Museum of Agriculture
All visitors are cordially invited to enjoy the traditional Mardi Gras celebrations at Letná on March 2, 2019. Masks are welcomed and have a free entrance. The event is organised by the Town Hall of Prague 7, The National Museum of Agriculture and Galerie Scarabeus. There is an entertainment programme for children including three fairy-tales, music and dancing.
