How to laugh more as a family

Life is hard, and parenting harder. So, what can we do when things get rough? Well, try laughter. It is difficult to laugh when we’re dealing with a tough situation. But something can diffuse the stress – laughter.

It’s not easy to work a full schedule with kids and never have arguments. We’re human after all. But prioritizing laughter over a sulk can go a long way in keeping the happiness quotient in the family. It’s not easy to start laughing when you’re grieving, but it’s definitely possible to laugh over a cup of spilt milk!

Here are some easy ways to add more tickles to your family’s funny bone.

The best thing to do when dealing with a crazy day is to catch a bunch of laughs at the end of it, before bedtime. Pick a comedy show and gather everyone to watch it together with popcorn – Yes! Mid-week! The squeals of laughter and fun does wonders to a family and people can approach their tests and projects better later.

We’re all so determined to be perfect parents, that we forget to be silly sometimes. When kids are really young, even calling each other funny names can get everyone cracking up! Mommy is a strawberry as she’s wearing pink, and daddy is vanilla as he’s wearing cream. And baby loves both the flavours!  Ha!

AI helps a lot. My son usually asks AI to make a fart sound when we’re all together. Although it seemed annoying at first, we’ve all learnt to laugh out loud and it’s now become hilarious.

Crack a joke at breakfast to start your day happy. Laughing out loud at the breakfast table can set the right mood for a Monday morning before the mad-crazy school run. It’s always better to have kids giggling while piling into the car rather than sulks and tantrums.

Funny names for bad habits. Yes, correcting a bad habit is needed, but treat it as an opportunity to laugh it off sometimes. I always say ‘XX is giving a nail-biting finish to dessert’ when I catch him nibbling his nails after dinner. This makes him grin and quickly hide his fingers. Then we all laugh out.

Life is long and we’d all like to look back at the laughs and feel warm. We all need to laugh more, to feel happy and fulfilled.
