Bezděz gothic castle is a national cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Bezděz hill looks awesome with a golden yellow hue in Autumn. The rocks on Bezděz hill are phonolite which make a loud sound when they are hit. The loud sounds can be experienced during thunderstorms when the storm sounds louder than it actually is!
Back in the days, it the castle was originally funded by Přemysl Otakar II (1260 -1278).
Until the end of the 16th century, it was used as a royal castle. From the first half of the 17th century a Benedictine monastery was established at the castle. The Benedictines from Montserrat, brought a copy of the Virgin of Montserrat (the Black Madonna) in 1666. Bezděz then became popular for pilgrims for many years.
The monastery was closed by Josef II in 1785 and its condition deteriorated over time. Kristián from Valdštejn then began its restoration in the 1840s.
Today there is a beautiful view from the 30 m tall Velká věž (Big castle tower) and a chapel regarded as an architectural treasure of the early gothic period in central Europe – making the castle a significant feature of Mácha´s region. From the castle tower one can get a view of a quarter of Czech Republic when the skies are clear.

The castle is accessible by foot from Doksy by following the 7 km red Mácha´s Road, and by train or a bus. It is also possible to cycle to castle Bezděz on cycling route numbers 25 and 3045.
Opening Hours:
The castle is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 9:00 to 16:30 hours. On Saturday, Sunday and Holidays the timing is 9:00 to 15:00 hours. There are guided tours on Saturday and Sunday.
