Swimming is a great life skill and most parents want their kids to learn to swim. Some kids start at 4 years, while others start at 6. Sometimes parents let kids into the water at 2 years already! But is there an age when kids should start swim lessons?

Well, no. Really speaking it’s totally up to the parents as to when their children should start swim lessons. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, it’s advisable for kids to start swim lessons when they are one.

Irrespective of whether you start at one or five or any other age, what’s most important is that kids have proper swim lessons with an instructor. Proper swim lessons actually help kids to not just learn swimming, but also to learn proper poolside manners – how to change, how to wash up before and after, hygiene and more.

Many times, parents start their kids off early and kids do swim very well even at just four years. Even if your child is a very good swimmer, kids should never be in the pool alone and unsupervised. Even teenagers are advised to swim with companions.

Very young kids, when started off early, tend to swallow pool water. But teaching kids to float on their backs while keeping their face up, helps.

Kids have different feelings about swimming. Some may fear water, while may get overexcited. In either case, a good swim instructor can help them. Make sure to encourage them to take help from their instructor. As parents we must reassure them that their teacher is there to help. Swim instructors are very capable, and are able to even calm a very excited child.

As parents, we can also help our kids. We have to make sure that kids get regular swim lessons and also be involved with them in the pool. Always reiterate pool rules each time you get to the pool even if it’s a familiar location. Make sure kids are aware of the pool’s exit points. Some pools also have deep ends, so make sure your kids are aware and always keep an eye on them.

Just because it is fun time at the pool, don’t forget other pool necessities – sunscreen and hats. Kids get sunburnt a lot at the poolside. It’s also advisable to wear a fully covered swim suit with rash guards.

Kids usually get hungry after a swim, so make sure to carry a snack or plan a meal right after a swim!
