National History Museums of Los Angeles County have prepared guidelines for kids on how to create your own dinosaur shadow puppet!
What you will need:
- Cardstock of any colour
- Colourful pencils or markers
- Sticks
- Twine or yarn
- Hole punch (possible to make a whole without is as well)
- Tape
- Scissors
When you have all your materials ready, you can get to making a puppet. Puppets may or may not have joints. If you go for the puppet with joint, think of the best place for joints to be connected. They should overlap the body of the puppet in order to work.
You can sketch a dinosaur by yourself, print out this template or look for other dinosaurs online. Print it out, cut out the body parts, trace them on the cardstock, cut those out as well, create joints with holes, assembly yarn, tape a stick, and perform!
For a performance you will need to craft a stage. You can cut out some space in the box in a way it looks like a frame, glue a white paper to it and arrange a lamp behind and over the stage. You can also craft a bigger stage with a curtain or a blanket.
Use your imagination or knowledge to come up with different scenarios. We hope you have fun with it!
