Bukovany

The Ch.G. Masaryková specialized children’s hospital is located in the building of the Bukovany castle, located in the picturesque nature of the Orlická water reservoir, on the border of Příbram and Písek districts in an ecologically safe landscape. The history of the castle dates back to the 14th century. In 1925, the ČSČK bought the castle from the Schwarzenberg family and spent six years reconstructing it to its current form. In 1933, President TGMasaryk visited the chateau. His visit is recorded in the chronicle and on film material. In 2016, the spa celebrated a significant jubilee – the 85th anniversary of its foundation – during the cultural and presentation event “Castle Celebration”.

Throughout its existence, the facility has been a children’s medical facility with a very good reputation and health care. Since 1949, the state has been the founder of the hospital, since 1994, the Czech Red Cross has been the founder, as the successor organization of the Czechoslovak Red Cross.

Today, masonry has been preserved both as a Gothic tower and a Renaissance building. The Pint fortress was owned by the Hussite wars until 1632. After them, Bukovany owned the Morelů family. Franz Morel of Letin added the western wing. In the 18th century – František Earl Wenger was added to the southern wing, the onion towers were repaired, and the north tower was clocked. Also, during these reconstructions, the castle chapel was restored.

In the chapel is an altarpiece from 1777, the tomb of Smrčka z Munich from 588 and the tombstone of Jan Bukovanský from Bukovan, Deputy of the Kingdom of Bohemia. In 1816, Bukovany Karel, Prince Schwarzenberg, bought it. The Schwarzenbergs owned the castle until 1925, afterwards the land reform was assigned to the Czechoslovak Red Cross. Thanks to the activity of the then President ČSČK Alice Masaryk, established a health center for children. Children’s treatment facility, named after Charlotte Garrigue Masaryk, still operates in the castle today.
